Hello,
Glad to see another Ubuntu user. The distro just kicks. Don't mess with source yet, as there is most likely an apt-get answer.
Go here:
http://www.ubuntuguide.org/. The most excellent resource of all time for any linux distro ever. Period. This will get anything working for you. Although this guide was orginally tailored for the alst release (Hoary, 5.04), I have personally used it seamlessly with Breezy (5.10).
The one thing you will want to do is add this to /etc/apt/sources.list.
deb
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ breezy multiverse
Then, uncomment the "universe" ones also. Your install CD may also have what you need (since you don't have net yet), so make sure that is in your sources.list (which it should be by default). Use the guide though. If it doesn't answer your question, let me know.
