Ubuntu - DWL-G520 - Madwifi - Headache

Hi guys, how are you today?

I've just installed ubuntu straight from the downloaded CD version 1.10.

The first thing I'm trying to do now is get my DWL-G520 wireless network card working because as we all know as soon as you get on the net you can fix anything and get anything.

From my understanding I need to get the madwifi-cvs-current.tar.gz onto the computer (done) then install that program, to get the drivers working, to get the card working, to get the net.

At the moment I have three problems.

1) I'm a complete linux and ubuntu newb, so I don't even know how to install it.

2) after following some guides, it seems a lot use apt-get from online sources which obviously i can't do because I don't have the net on that computer.

3) It seems I need some tools like sharutils which my comptuer is saying I don't have (true or not I'm not sure).

If anyone could take the time to post a step by step guide of how to do it, or at least a link to one, that deals with ubuntu programs straight off the set up CD, without the internet, it would be greatly appreciated.

Apart from that any tips or comments are only going to get me further.

Thanks guys - appreciate your help.

Hello,

Glad to see another Ubuntu user. The distro just kicks. Don't mess with source yet, as there is most likely an apt-get answer.

Go here: http://www.ubuntuguide.org/. The most excellent resource of all time for any linux distro ever. Period. This will get anything working for you. Although this guide was orginally tailored for the alst release (Hoary, 5.04), I have personally used it seamlessly with Breezy (5.10).

The one thing you will want to do is add this to /etc/apt/sources.list.

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ breezy multiverse

Then, uncomment the "universe" ones also. Your install CD may also have what you need (since you don't have net yet), so make sure that is in your sources.list (which it should be by default). Use the guide though. If it doesn't answer your question, let me know.

Post DWL-520

I am surprised that you are having problems with your wireless card, the dwl-520. I have the same exact card as you. I just installed Breezy 5.10 last night and configured my card without any problems. Off the top of my head I don't remember the revision #, but I am sure the card is a dwl-520. Tried to get it to work with Fedora 4, but no luck. After the instll went to system, administration and networking and my card was listed there as "interface eth0 ath". That might be an abbreviation for the atheros chip set. Put is ssid info and key and connected to ap without any problems.

Will check revision # when i get home and let you know.

The best help I found for instaling mine came from here. Mine is a Linksys, but the step by step really worked.
