Install them both then when the configuration question is asked about which you want as the default choose your preference and it will be used next time the X server is started. Then at the command line after having logged out of your Desktop as root
/etc/init.d/gdm stop then
/etc/init.d/kdm start will stop GDM and start your KDM allowing you too login reverse to go back to GDM, you might have to use sudo in front of the commands as normal user as I believe Ubuntu disables root user login.
