Trouble with changing gdm and kdm

I can't seem to access the login screen setup. As a matter of fact I can't access anything dealing with changing gdm or kdm. Anyway, when I click on the login screen setup icon, all I see is the little bouncing icon beside my pointer and then it goes away. Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

Type the result of :
# cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log | grep "EE"

here.
