I have followed the guide, but when I get to the stage to accept the updates and download/install them, I get a dependency error. I have no idea how to fix it, so can someone help me?
It looks to me like one of your dependency problems is because kdelibs3 isn't being selected for an update. Is YaST listing kdelibs3 in your update list?
Edit: In case my answer was incomplete, install libjasper then try the update again. Your screen shot doesn't show all of the dependency issues so it's hard to tell what other problems you might have. I would think by adding the new installation source to YaST, dependency problems would have been taken care of.
Try to run YOU (YaST Online Update) before attempting the KDE update. This should give you libjasper in the required version, which is required by kdelibs3.
Originally posted by Alex[RM-UK] I tried it again and I had no luck. What is this 'libjasper' you were talking about? I can't find it for download on that site, also what does it do?
The link didn't work the way I thought it would. Just type libjasper into the search field. That was one of the dependencies listed in your screen shot.
Open YaST -> Software -> Online Update
This will certainly only help if libjasper has been installed with YaST -> Software -> Install and Remove Software previously.
To answer the other question as well: have a look at your screenshot! It will tell you (libjasper-1.701)
Ok, I have done that - but now when I try and do the KDE update, it comes up with different dependecy errors. what shall I do, keep downloading the file's it needs?
It sounds to me like either YaST or you (Alex) are installing more KDE programs than you originally installed with 3.2. That, or KDE 3.4 REQUIRES additional files for the update. The solution is to update ONLY the KDE files that are already installed. It can be a little tedious to check these all out individually but success will be assured. Then your only dependency issues will be additional files that the newer 3.4 needs, which will all be listed and be available from either SUSE mirrors or rpm.pbone.net.
The other solution would be to post another screen shot with all of your dependency issues so we could guide you.
How would I find out what KDE 3.2 packages I have installed? I never actually got to choose what I wanted to install, SuSE 9.1 just installed it as default when I first installed 9.1.
Here is a screenshot of the whole dependency errors, this is all of the ones I get.
These dependency errors are the usual stuff in this kind of update. The ieee1284 can be installed from packman (see thread about YaST update sources) and you may search the Novell/SUSE forum for libtunepimp for a solution on this one (there was a thread about this before). I think it came from guru's repository.
abisko -> I managed to get ieee1284 from packman and that got rid of the one dependency error, I couldn't find a solution to libtunepimp - but I read the description of the file that it needed, and it was only for a jukebox player or something similar (kdemultimieda3-juke) so I just didn't install it as I don't think I would need it.
I have finally installed KDE 3.4! wahoo. But, I am slightly disapointed by it:
Firefox looks horrible, it's like Win 98 but worse. It has massive black lines seperating the toolbars, yuck yuck.
Even when I set the login manager background to a different one, it still uses the default.
When I go to login, there is a text box underneath the main login box with a load of errors, how can I get rid of this.
Another thing is on the desktop, before when I had 3.2 and I set Icons to align to grid, there wasn't a big gap inbetween the icons, but now with KDE 3.4 there is a huge gap between them and it looks rubbish.
