So I'm teetering on the edge of no longer needing to boot into Windows for anything. Today I got my Powermate knob & printer to work great, last on my list in the build in SD card reader in my laptop. The latest kernel, 2.6.14 has support for this particular deivce out of the box. I'm running Suse 10 w/ kernel 2.6.13 and have read up a little on updating your kernel manually. It doesn't seem too too hard, but I'm still not comfortable enough to do that on my own, and I'm sure if I did I'd be bound to really mess something up. So my question was if YOU has an automated way to update your kernel as it does for just regular software packages. The final release of 2.6.14 just came out today, and I'm wondering how long, if YOU actually does this, does it take for the update to typically be posted? Thanks!

Get the kernel from kernel-of-the-day aka kotd in the apt/people section of ftp.gwdg.de. Don't try to compile it yourself from a bone kernel. Suse has too much shit linked to it. Get the kernel and the proprietary addon package.

YOU does not do this. You must rpm -ivh kernel*.rpm from the download that you didn't get yet. YOU is on Suse's schedule of release coolness, not yours.

alright so I looked on this ftp server, and i'm seeing no rpm's for the latest kernel (assuming that's what you were talking about?), I just see a patch in bz2 and the entire kernel in tar.gz

Holy crap, that's awesome. I'm running an Intel Centrino processor, I assume I'm just going with the default kernel? So I just download it and run it? What about configuration? Does it copy my existing one? And the bootloader? Sorry if these are all stupid questions, I really just don't want to F over my operating system.

edit: Okay, I've gathered i need the default and the default-nongpl, but when i try to install one it says it needs the other, and vice versa. Is there anyway to install them together so it solves their dependancy on one another?

Oh and also, is that site a repository I can add to yast? And if it is, is it a good one?

Okay so I read through your post again, and was able to successfully install both rpms from the command prompt. And it rebooted fine, showed up as 2.6.14, and I was even able to mount my SD card using my built in reader. Everything else seemed to be just the way I left it EXCEPT my wireless no longer worked. All the network settings were still the same, the modules loaded were all still the same, yast still saw it. I had to downgrade back to 2.6.13 to get back on the 'net, very upsetting. Any idea why that happened?
