If you have a Nvidia graphic card, you have to reinstall the nvidia driver after a kernel upgrade, of course with the kernel sources/headers of the new kernel.
You can boot in runlevel 3, and work in text mode to do the reinstallation ;
or you can change the graphic card driver in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file from nvidia to nv or vesa to get your graphical WM back and reinstall the nvidia driver in a more comfortable environment, if you are uneasy with the command line text mode.
Don't panic, it's not a serious issue.
