How do I connect my open SUSE workstation to my home network?
Hello everyone. I am a newbie, like many others, and am learning as I go. I have to say, though, I am so impressed with the distros of Linux I have been using (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Open SUSE) and cannot see a reason to use Windows anymore (hence my handle -- ibelieve. Yep, I've seen the light.
I have read some other threads that seem to answer my first question but thought I'd still post the question for any further elaboration anyone can provide. I'd like to know how to connect my Open SUSE workstation to my home network. Historical threads seem to indicate that I do that using Samba. Anything else I should know before I start?
Well, what's on your home network? Do you just want to be on the network or are you looking to access/share something in particular? Give some detail so we can better assist you!
Is your workstation at work? Or are you asking about accessing shares? What are the other computers on your network?
If you are talking about file sharing with other windows machines, then install and configure samba. YaST2 has a configuration module to configure the samba server.
Another method is to use samba swat and configure it in your web browser.
Edit /etc/xinet.d/swat
change the line "disable = yes" to "disable = no"
Code:
# SWAT is the Samba Web Administration Tool.
service swat
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/swat
only_from = 127.0.0.1
log_on_failure += USERID
disable = no
}
Also consider installing the Samba-doc package. It will give you a number of books including: Samba 3 by Example, Samba 3 HOWTO & Reference Guide and Using Samba. One of the sample configurations in the "Samba 3 by Example" may be what you need. It goes through how to create the directory you want to share for different types of shares. For example, if it is a globally writable share, you want to set the "sticky" bit on the directory.
