When I upgraded to KDE 3.4 I lost the ability to logon to root from the KDE 3.4 splash screen. Each release seems better, but like Windows it is getting more restrictive! Does anybody know how to re-enable root access?

It'll be good for you. You should never login as root and start the X-server anyway. It's a huge security risk. When you need to do root-related administration simply open a terminal and type "su". That will give you root permissions temporarily.

I appreciate your comment, but another vendor likes to determine what is good for me already. That is why I use Linux. I would rather make my own decisions about how to operate my personal machine. I already use su all the time. There are times I would rather freely do whatever I like in KDE as root without going through hoops to do it. It is a single user system so I have no worries about hurting myself.

The question still remains, how does one log into root with the logon screen, or do we go to init 3, logon as root and do a startx?

OK... well, edit the following file:

/usr/kde/3.4/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

there you'll see a line where it reads:
# Allow root logins?
# Default is true
AllowRootLogin=false

change false to true and you are all set. In some distributions that file is found at "/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm".

And just for the record, in Windows we are always logged as administrator and that's one of the reasons for it's lack of security. To login as root in Linux is like re-making the very same mistake that the other company decided for you
