I got quite angry and put Mepis in....and then got mad at Mepis because it runs so darn slow on this laptop of mine. Even their mepis lite is horrific on this laptop.
So I dumped the Mepis and put the slackware in.
I just got done putting in 2.6.16 kernel compiled, etc.
I'm going to give it another shot; while I'm loaded/running in 2.6.16 kernel mode.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Linux Wireless!!!It can make you stay up to ungodly hours just to tell you it doesn't work....
Oh You Kn-o-o-o-w it!
Tonight, after a few hours...ah-hem! cough cough...just got the laptop's touchpad to work AND be able to plug in and use a USB mouse with the mouse wheel. Yes...I'm still battling that on this laptop. Up to now I've been using pkgtool to switch.
I had used your Xorg before if you recall...but I'd stall at "starting X11" and could not for the life of me understand why.
Finally, I saw a little line in dmesg...and tried out the following / combined with yours:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Alps"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "imps2" <-----------this line can you believe it!
EndSection
That little imps2 comment was everything, but differed from yours. Why I am different, I don't know. It works tho so I feel like I accomplished something ROFL.
I have successfully installed 2.6.12.1 kernel becuase the wiki page says they got this card to work on that kernel.
I get to the "firmware section"...and that's where I'm totally confused. I feel stupid, but I don't understand how they want me to "rename" the firmware file that they want me to download.
So now I am at the point where I have to rename them and place them in /lib/modules
But I can't figure out what they want me to call them.
Bob I cant send you an email it's turned off in your profile.
The md5 sum files on your site dont work for me.
I downloaded the 2.6.13 package, could you let me know please for the madwifi?
Please explain. Whatdoes not work about the md5 files? To me, they look like the package checks out OK:
Code:
$ md5sum --check madwifi-20060131_2.6.13-i486-1.tgz.md5
madwifi-20060131_2.6.13-i486-1.tgz: OK
You see the way it appears on my screen I did not see the extension, sooo I thought I just click on the link for the md5 and it would open a new page / tab in my browser showing the value, kind of like a text file.
Two observations with this wg511t netgear. Just felt I should report my findings.
Madwifi:
I'm getting awefully high processor usage/consumption (or what feels like it to me if I were in windows) with madwifi. The mouse cursor comes and goes. Bear in mind I only have 300 mhz and I am probably a rare breed using an old laptop with wireless. If I were in windows I'd say I had to "turn down hardware acceleration". IWCONFIG reports 54 Mbs. I tried on 2.6.13 (testing kernel) and a custom kernel I made. The pc is usable however akward at times. I'm using file Madwifi-20060131_2.6.13-i486-1.tgz
