Using the 'SlackBuild method' and after many horrible interpretations I finally 'got it.'
As I wrote previously, "You do need to build a few packages to get the hang of things and develop a rhythm."

Congratulations!

You can try the 173.14.15 driver. It's BETA but there's no need of SlackBuild and etc.
Just:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-*-173.14.15-pkg0.run
I installed it a few hours ago.. haven't seen anything wrong

find it here

You can set this to either "nv" or "nvidia" as I think the nvidia-switch script is looking for either of those two and will error if you aren't already using an NVidia one.
(didn't look at the code though so could be wrong on that)
The nvidia-switch script does nothing with the xorg.conf file. In fact, the SlackBuild README states that you must edit it on your own.

You don't even need the proprietary drivers if you use "nv" as your driver (no hardware acceleration though). If you are using the proprietary drivers then "nvidia" is what you want to use.

True, but a PITA.

When possible I prefer to automate such processes. I maintain separate xorg.conf files for the nvidia and nv drivers. With a script I quickly switch between the two. Perhaps the following will help:

Switching X Video Drivers
