Slackware64-15 KDE & Libreoffice slow start when root
Hi!
Slackware64-15 and current at some point with slackpkg upgrade made a root unusable on it.
When login as root and startx to KDE:
It takes 28 seconds to load KDE and then FIVE (5) minutes! to start LibreOffice-7.3 from Eric H.
On a contrary, when login non root user, start times are:
startx KDE - 4 seconds (10 times less)
LibreOffice 3 seconds (100 times less then as root!)
There is no difference in start times to start Chromium.
I've looked all log files, and there is nothing regarding slow down.
And a non root user I use is a root clone.
Why not use a virtual terminal in your user desktop and then 'su -i' to get root access and environment? No need to start a environment as root when you can use a vt in a user desktop to allow usage. I would still use caution when working with root but it's your choice not mine. I always use a vt and very rarely switch back to a root environment except in a vt. My initial setup is to boot then login as root to do regular maintenance then switch to another terminal and login as a user to start my desktop after local work has been done.
Since some 20 years or so I login to Slackware Current64 (as well as other Linuxes and Unixes) as root and I never saw and do not see now such a slowdown when starting LibreOffice. As I run XFCE exclusively I assume something is wrong with your KDE.
Confirmed - start nonroot kde, su in VT, then LibreOffice starts in seconds.
When xfce root, all starts fast including xfce.
Something wrong with KDE - nontoot is fast, root is 100 time slower regarding LibreOffice. Looks something obstruct root user starting KDE and applications.
Running KDE as non root is fast, so nothing is wrong with its installation.
Looks like I'll have to become accustomed to be nonroot an constantly su in VT. Frustrating.
In my opinion it is much safer to run a Slackware work station as a regular user. As onebuck stated if you need root privileges then open a terminal emulator like Konsole or xfce4-terminal and su to root.
Why would you run LO as root? I'd advise not being so keen to give any program root privileges when it doesn't require them in normal operation. You're inviting trouble.
Note if you start X as root, everything started in your xsession is going to run as root including a web browser.
So, because of that little detail, a random website javascript can write to any file on your system.
I'd admire your bravery, but this is like trying to use a glass to hammer down a nail, i.e. it's doomed to failure.
