LibreOffice Writer can't start on Debian 9 but other LibreOffice apps work fine

LibreOffice Writer doesn't work on my fresh Debian 9 XFCE4 install; 32 bit. The progress bar on the splash seems to progress fine, but at the end it immediately quits. All of the other LibreOffice applications open up fine...showing the same progress splash but then actually opening up properly in a new window when it reaches the end.

If I type in "lowriter", there are no error messages. It simply returns to the command prompt after the progress splash completes.

If I type in "lowriter test.txt" then it actually opens up a blank window briefly for a split second at the end of the progress splash. But this blank window does not populate with any sort of GUI widgets or anything. It just goes away after a split second and it returns to the command prompt. No messages, no error messages.

This is on a 32 bit Atom N450 netbook (Ace AspireONE with 2GB of RAM and 30GB SATA SSD).

This is a fresh Debian 9 install with the XFCE4, MATE, and LXDE desktop tasksels as well as IceWM installed. I have checked XFCE4's checkboxes to "Launch GNOME services on startup" and "Launch KDE services on startup". I have tried changing the GTK2 theme in MATE to different things.

I have tried XFCE4, MATE, LXDE, Openbox, Icebox - the symptoms are always the same. In all cases, all of the other LibreOffice components open up fine.

I have tried turning on/off compositing. No effect.

I have not yet tried installing calligrawords because I'm wary of loading up a ton of KDE stuff on this. My experience is that installing a lot of KDE tends to muck up things.

Create a new system user and login as the new user.
Test and report please.

Have a good one!

Exact same symptoms with fresh new user. Typing in "lowriter" simply returns to command prompt after progress splash completes. Typing in "lowriter test.txt" opens up a blank window for a split second at the end of the progress splash, and then returns to command prompt. No error messages.

It is still possible to disable JRE starting localc (Calc) or another LO component and uncheck
menu Tools – Options… – Advanced – Enable a Java runtime environment checkbox.

from the first link https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/quest...n-32bit-linux/

I went into LibreOffice Calc, then Tools -> Options -> Advanced, and unchecked Java Runtime environment checkbox. Now lowriter works!
