Where did you get the Slackware CD from? I used the DVD version that was supposed to be bootable, from the cover of Linux Format, but it had corrupted directories and wouldn't "startx" at all.
In the end I had to switch to a PCPlus cover DVD, and burn the CD from there, which worked but had no localisation files.
If you can get hold of another copy try installing that one.
I got slackware from slackware.org and I copied an ISO file over from an http site in the States. Hrm...i'm thinking i have a bad CD as you suggest amos... I'll copy another one and see how it goes.
You're lucky with the iso's. I couldn't even get a single iso to burn properly! I had to download all the files after I spent a day trying to get RH7.3 installed(hardware problems...), and then it took me about half an hour to figure out how to locate my media source! Maybe you should do as I did and download all the packages, boot the computer with a disk or your CD, then install from your hard drive?
I have tried /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and the file doesn't exist here...i did try xfmconfig and it brought me back to the screen at startup where you decide wheter or not you want KDE or Gnome etc etc...i pressed KDE and it brought me back to the command prompt...hrm.
