And if you've got a fast enough Internet connection I'd read up about how to edit your sources.list to stop it prompting for the cd and force Debian to install updates from the Internet.

Code:
# gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Remove the hashes in front of the repositaries you wish to use. Place a hash in front of the CD entry (that stops it being used as a "source").
Click save and re-run "apt-get update"

Just to elaborate a bit more...

When you installed the first time, somewhere along the way you were asked to configure apt. There were different choices, cdrom, http, ftp etc. Apparently yours is set for cdrom.

Follow Andy's advice to reconfigure apt if you wish to draw from sources on the net. Otherwise it would be one of your cd's or dvd that it is looking for. I have a cable modem and as such I configured mine to draw from the different sites.

This helped me a good deal: APT How To There are some great resources on the main Debian site--I'd definitely check them out.

Welcome to Debian. I know I have been enjoying it.

You need to modify your sources.list file. That is the file that controls where debian gets its updates and where it goes to get them. Reply and copy/paste your sources.list entries and we can tell you what needs to be changed. To do that, open a terminal window and do the following:

#cat /etc/apt/sources.list

That will display your sources.list. Highlight the results, copy it and paste it into a reply. My list file is as follows:

******************************
neuromancer:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
#deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main
deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main

# Madwifi Drivers
#deb ftp://debian.marlow.dk/ sid madwifi
#deb-src ftp://debian.marlow.dk/ sid madwifi

# Nvidia drivers
#deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

# Java - Blackdown Version
deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/java/debian/ testing non-free

neuromancer:~#

****************************
Which update site you use depends on which version you are running, stable, testing, or unstable. Posting your sources.list will tell us what you are using, and how to modify your sources file.

Good Luck
