What you understand by Wayland?

Because the Wayland itself is only a set of libraries to build Wayland clients and servers (called compositors), it does nothing itself alone.

IF by Wayland you understand a Wayland Desktop Environment, probably you can go up to Weston on Slackware 14.2 - but there are no ways to get working things like Wayland/Plasma5, because it needs so many package updates and additional packages, that in the end you will having built by hand something like the Slackware-current.

There is the slackbuilds.org offer for Wayland:

https://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=wayland&sv=14.2

Additionally, probably you will want also the standalone XWayland server, otherwise your Weston sessions will be barely useful - being able to run almost no graphical applications.

PS. Please change the thread title on "How can I install Wayland on Slackware 14.2?" because without specifying the release, it's misleading - the Slackware 15.0 beta have this Wayland included and even Wayland/Plasma5.

I asked this because i heard that Wayland haves a better performance than Xorg, and i was using GNOME, so i wanted to test it.

Your best bet to test would be Slackware live. Then there's a thread that might be a good start.

Do not expect any gnome in there.

Btw +1 for the title change.

I created this thread just to get some info. (i know, i said i want to test it but my computer is just 4gb of ram, so i don`t think it will work well.)

I already tested Slackware Live, and i kinda like it. Currently i`m using the Stable with Fluxbox, and i`m happy with him.

You're saying you tested plasma with wayland on Slackware live ?

Since we are in bêta and considering the age of stable, I'd rather wait for 15 to test wayland on stable...

Executing startkwayland from console or choosing one of the Wayland/Plasma5 sessions on SDDM.

There on SDDM, the standard Wayland/Plasma5 session expect to be quite stable, while the "Full Wayland" is like was previously on the Slackware-current, before our BDFL merged a series of changes.

In fact, all this setup is inspired from openSUSE, which probably does the best today the Wayland/Plasma5 setup.

Of course, this happens for the users with AMD or Intel graphics - NVIDIA put on Wayland for a Via S3 drivers quality. Take a look at the attached screenshot about what usually The Blob can do on Wayland/Plasma5.

This is best which can do the 390.x series of The Blob on my GeForce 605 DP and Wayland/Plasma5 up to date.

Don't believe everything you hear. It is all about planned bright future. So far one can't replace Xorg - those who succeded celebrate for a week.

I don't know why are you so pessimistic. As a matter of fact, I ran Sway on Slackware a year ago https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ml#post6115012

(although, it was running in a virtual machine. Time to get a second computer and do real tests. I'd like to move to Wayland sooner than later)

Why are you so optimistic?

For what reason? It will be bottleneck killing many small wm's - but perhaps this is a goal. Just unfair competition to reach monopoly. But I am person of choices - can't eat the same food all the time.

No, it will kill ALL WMs because on Wayland is no such thing like a WM or even a universal enforced server, like on X11.

There are compositors, which they are servers themselves.

Means that on Wayland there is no more Das Server, like is on the Xorg.

This means much more freedom for the desktops environments to implement each features they want.

Believe or not, the Wayland/Plasma5 has a different features set and behavior as graphical server, compared with Wayland/Gnome3.

And they run in different graphical servers: KWin for Plasma5, Mutter for Gnome3. And Weston for Weston.

Nobody will shoot the Fluxbox from the back, but for what would it be good in a place where are no WMs?

Unless it can act as a Wayland server (which is essentially the equivalent of Xorg server on X11), for what it would be good?
