Configuring Sound in 2.6.5 and KDE 3.2.1

Ok, I guess I need to turn in my linux hat.
Here's the problem:
I have sound in KDE 3.2.1 as root.
I don't have sound in KDE as a user. Get an arts error about device not accessible, permission denied.
for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated.

here's the exact error:
device: default can't be opened for playback (permission denied)

Just for the record, I did a search for my problem, and didn't find it right away. After searching for almost 1/2 hour, I did finally find a reference to the solution.

Just in case someone else reads this: I had to set the Arts Sound System from autodetect to threaded open sound system. then, bingo, have sound through arts.

Love LInux, it's a brain bender.

find out which device it uses and do a

#chmod a+rw /dev/xxx (xxx being the device)
