Is it possible?

my kernel doesn't seem to want me to compile with modular sound. I've tried over 25 times and it just doesn't include sound as a module while I've been following directions from a lot of different sources and they all say just include sound support as module.

I think the kernel drivers are cool. Build 'em in! The user space drivers used to be better but they got included in the kernel source. Then again, different soundcards may produce different results so the user space drivers may work better for some people. But try building the Alsa drivers into the kernel. You might like it.

darkleaf -- Are you saying that the actual kernel compile process fails, or that the new kernel doesn't seem to want to use the modules? If it's the latter, could it also be that the modules are being compiled, but you aren't loading the modules (via the insmod or modprobe command)? -- J.W.

I compile the kernel with sound support as module but when I want to insert the module, or use sndconfig which looks if I have modular sound it says it can't find the module soundcore. 'modprobe soundcore' doesn't work either cause the module can't be found.

I'll try building alsa in cause if I compile them from source I get a lot of errors in the compile process when I'm just following the tutorial. Still strange that it can't find soundcore module when I compile it the way everyone and every tutorial I've read so far tells me too. I have a thread about that in the software forum but it looks like nobody knows what's wrong

So if I build them into the kernel I need the alsa driver only or the VIA82Cxxx driver as well?

I might have found the problem. I was compiling the kernel with make install and I read I should add moudles to that with make install && make modules_install
