system logger, single-user, child setpgid errors - Related or Not?
I am running RedHat 9 along with KDE 3.4 . Due to a recent DUMB and CARELESS mistake I uninstalled glibc. Of course my system was useless so I rebooted in "linux rescue".
In linux rescue I mounted my hardisk [mkdir /foo, mount /dev/hda2 /foo], got all of my commands back from /mnt/sysimage, and managed to re-install glibc 2.3.4 and glibc-common 2.3.4 and everything seemed to be working OK. I then re-booted the computer and no I am encountering a few errors.
1- When booting I get:
Starting system logger:
It hangs for about 5 minutes. It then carries on and boots up the graphical login GUI. It does not seem to have a negative effect, but it (a) makes rebooting a very timely process and (b) concerns me since I am experiencing 2 other problems since my linux rescue.
2- After most commands (e.g. emacs, latex, etc.. but not ones like cd, ls) I get an annoying error:
bash: child setpgid [xxxx to yyyy]: No such process
The x's and y's vary on the process. The command works OK, but it is very annoying. I do not get the same problem if using tcsh. I have seen other posts about this but none of them seem relevant to my problem. In addition, I have another *possibly* related problem:
3- While testing if tcsh works with out the annoying message in (2) I discovered that I seem to be running in some sort of pseudo-single-user mode. If at any prompt I type:
[coreymc@localhost test]$ sh
I get the following response:
bash: child setpgid [xxxx to yyyy]: No such process
sh-2.05b$
Please help! Did I do something wrong in linux rescue to cause this? Are these problems related? Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
coreymc
