Starting System Logger: FAILED ?????

Can anyone help me with this - Early this morning, all my logging stopped
recording entries.
I have had a quick look on line and found no solutions and tried to start
the logging in a few different ways always with the same response...

[user@mail /]# /etc/init.d/syslog restart
Shutting down kernel logger: [ OK ]
Shutting down system logger: [ OK ]
Starting system logger: [FAILED]
Starting kernel logger: [ OK ]

can anyone suggest a solution so I can see what my mail is doing etc?
Thanks in advance!!

i would run chkrootkit to see if you were compromised, there
is a rootkit out there that does this same thing ...
also check and see if your logs are huge (over 2GB) possibly
causing it not to start ...
