Booting problem...

I had windows 2003 runningperfect on hard drive 1, went to install red hat 9 on harddrive 2, I couldn't get into windows 2003. I ran the fixmbr command, from windows recovery disk, then i would get no os loading. Finally, i went into gparted and totally wiped out harddrive2(linux). I then ran the fix mbr command again through windows recovery. Now I get a "disk read error" "ctrl+alt+delete" (my keyboard locks up)

what do i do? I want to be able to load into windows to get some of my important files :-/

thanks

ken

Define "couldn't get into windows 2003". Did the boot loader come up or what?

Is this a new drive you just added or a pre-existing one you wiped to put Red Hat on?

"Disk Read Error" is a hardware issue, unless there's no partition on the drive, (I think that's how it would react with no partition anyway). Make sure all the cables are pushed in good.

You said you ran FixMBR, did you run FixBoot? I've corrupted GRUB before, and I usually ran FixMBR and FixBoot to completely clear my master boot record, and it usually allowed me to get to Windows. I'm sure I don't need to tell you now, but you should never mess around with alternative OS's, Dual Boot systems, etc, without having a up to date back up in case something does go wrong. I personally have never fubared a Windows partition while installing Linux, but I imagine it could be done... Unfortunately, your situation doesn't sound good. The Freezing up is concerning.

Here's details on FixMBR, click the FixBoot link for a few instructions on it..

Good luck
