My system (P4, 2GHz, RH Linux 9.0) is not booting since yesterday.
During the booting process the OS detects the harddisk, tapedrive ...
After that it is giving a message 'init not found try passing init=option'
The booting process stops at this point.
I am unable to figure out how to solve this problem.Hope someone will help me. Also please let me know what could be the reason?
your bootloader can't find your inittab script......
it does not know what run level to go to........IE
0=halt
1=single user mode
3=multiuser
6=reboot
this script is usually in the /etc/ directory.
Sorry for the delay from my part. I was not well.
i have tried to give the run level to my grub boot loader as per the procedure given in the RedHat site, inthe URL
https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/...runlevels.html
but there is no change in the status of the problem. i am giving the last few lines in the boot process where it get stopped.
creating root device
mkrootdev:lable / not found
mounting root file system
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed :2
freeing unused kernel memory : 156k freed
kernel panic : No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
I don't have a solution, but may you can find one with help:
Try booting with "linux on a floppy" or a live linux cd (I use knoppix) and go check if init and inittab are there. If not then do a fsck (I can't imagine why they would disappear except from a hd failure,human error or malicious intervention) and try to find copies of them for your distro.
I have the exact same problem trying to boot a custom 2.6 kernel, and I know for a fact my initrd is there. Is this perhaps something to do with needing (or not needing) to configure a ram drive support in the kernel, because I have and didn't really feel I needed to at the time (was done at the suggestion of a friend to support bootsplash.)
Just a thought. I've tried this more times then I can count and have never got the 2.6 to compile right.
anikj, I was with the same problem a couple weeks ago. I was trying to compile 2.6.2 kernel.
This is the most important line at the log you post:
"mount: error 2 mounting ext3"
If the ext3 support is compiled as module, and your system is in an ext3 partition, it won't load. The ext3 support must be compiled (or loaded) with the kernel, not a module.
If you have and older kernel version, try booting from it and compiling again.
