Glade3 strange behavior, menu items disappear

I have been developing some gui's for some projects using the GTK+ toolkit and the Glade3 Interface Designer on Slackware 12.0. When I make menu's complie and run the program the menu-items display correctly when I click each menu.

Then when I want to make changes to the menu's or add more functionality, I open the .glade file in the interface designer and the menus are visible, but every menu-item is gone.

This is a re-occuring event and everytime I want to edit the glade file my menu items will disappear. What is going on???
