Question Mepis 6 - Strange icon, Missing menu items, etc

Hi all,

I finally decided to go from 3.43 to 6.0 last night. It is a fresh install (upgrade) and I have not yet updated anything on it. I have a screenshot that shows some of my issues, but I don't know how to post it, so I will have to describe it.

I have two (2) accounts: cat1978 (main) and guest1978 (secondary)

1) When I look at my "home" folder, I see a strange icon next to my cat1978 home folder. It looks like a red / orange colored male end of a plug, like you would plug into a wall outlet, etc. The cat1978 account was the default account I created when I upgraded from Mepis 3.43 to Mepis 6.0 (cd version, not dvd version). What does that red / orange plug icon mean?

2) Another issue that puzzles me is that the cat1978 account seems to have more menu items in the "Kmenu" than the guest1978 account. As an example, while I am in the cat1978 account I can go to the "Kmenu" then go to "System" then go to "File System" then select one of the following: a) File Manager Super User, b) Qtparted, c) Removable media utility KwikDisk and d) View disk usage KDiskFree. However, while I am in the guest1978 account, only option b (Qtparted) is listed. Why is this and how can I make all my accounts have the same menu items listed?

3) Also, I can not find the "guarddog" firewall icon anywhere in any menu, regardless of which account I use. Where can I find it so that I may examine its settings, etc?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

1. Have a right click on the icon ,that may tell you more . Under general there is a spanner icon for configuration also look in there
You have a file for icons probably in kde files ,have a look there for your icon and that may tell you what its used for . Ill have a look see and post back if I find it too.
/usr/share/icons/default.kde/64x64/ had a look here but nothing like you describe
Your description sounds like a connection of some kind , see "chardevice.png"

2. How a new user's desktop is set up is set by the bash profile files in roots home folder . Go there and look into the files with bash and profile in their names . If I get time same as above.
gotta have show hidden files on.

3. Guardog is under Internet->Security

4. Posting pictures may be possible by using http://www.imageshack.us/ and posting a link to it here

I have never used imageshack before, so I hope this works:

The screenshot should show both #1 and #2. I looked under Internet---> Security and found Guarddog...I guess I did not look hard enough. LOL.

I don't recall problem #2 on Mepis 3.43.

Thanks for your input. And anyone else reading this, let me know if you can see my image shack screenshot. Thanks!

Concerning problem #1 check the folder properties concerning ownership.(right click) You may have cat1978 as a root account. This is a bad thing. P.S. Image Shack working fine.

the plug shows that the folder is shared. By default, Mepis 6 makes your home folder shared as read only, so others on your network can share your files. You can change the sharing options either through KDE by right-clicking the folder-->Properties-->Sharing, or by editin your smb.conf file, or by using the samba web gui, Swat

mykrob:

So if I have another account lacking that "shared" icon, then that means that account folder is not shared, correct?

In otherwords, the only folder that is shared is the one with the "shared" icon, correct?

Thanks.

BTW....mykrob.......is that name from South Park?

The folder with the plug, along with folders inside the folder, are shared. Whether they are read-only or not is a different story.. By default, shared files are read-only.

also, my real name is Myk Robinson, so not from South Park.. Been asked that before, though,
