I installed the DKMS nvidia drivers and they appear to be working OK but there is no nvidia splash screen I was used to seeing with all previous versions. Is this normal
I'm not seeing it either but I can't say that I miss it. As long as the driver is working, it's fine with me.
I seem to remember that xorg.conf has an option that allows one to enable/disable the splash screen. Maybe that is what is hiding the splash? And who knows, mandriva using xorg 1.3 rather than the 1.2 that most distros are still using may have something to do with it as well.
I don't know know why you would want to run any of those commands. Afaik, you simply need to remove "NoLogo" "True" from xorg.conf. But, well, if you installed the driver, you should have an "nvidia-settings" menu item. Did you have a look at that one?
There is no entry in xorg.conf, and I can't find a nvidia-settings anywhere. I'll install Quake3 that will tell me whether its working or not. xorg.conf appears below. Thanks Ian

Had a look at the log files, a few warning but nothing that should give you those issues. Direct rendering is enabled, that's good. But what I find puzzling is that you get only 1850fps . My 7600GST scores about 10000 on Mandriva (8000 with Compiz on Ubuntu, 14000 with metacity on Suse). Is that an old card you have? If not, you should score much higher; if yes, then you need to install the nvidia driver for older cards (legacy).
