7300 should score a lot higher than 1850 afaik. My ATI X300 scores about 4500 and that's a lower-end card from two generations ago.
If I were you, I'd remove the driver and reinstall it. As far as I can remember, I didn't specifically bother with DKMS and selected just the nvidia driver. If DKMS is required, it should come along as dependency.
As jay73 suggested I reinstalled the dkms grivers. I now see the splash screen but still only getting 1860FPS on glxgears. I cant understand why instaling the relevent kernel-source the real nvidia drivers refuse to load on 2008
I can't know what you did exactly but when you tell me that you installed the kernel source, something is telling me that this is not quite right. I did not explicitly install any kernel source. So maybe that's where things go wrong for you? You only need the nvidia driver from the repositories - if it needs anything in the source or headers department, it will take care of it. Are you sure that you have all of the repositories enabled? The dkms module is not the same as the simple nvidia driver, you should have a choice as far as I remember (working on Ubuntu right now so I can't check). All I can say is: have a good look at your repo list and use search menu item, then type in nvidia. If you find a driver other than dkms, remove dkms and install the other one instead.
You can type "init 3" without (quotations) in Konsole, then typ "MCC" (again without quotations) and scroll down to the word "display", hit right arrow on keyboard and hit "OK", and it should give you the ability to choose corrrect driver for Nvidia. You can also run test from there.
No, if you start moving the box around or doing something else to it, the number of fps will shoot up fast. Although I have to say that the highest If've seen it climb is two or three times the regular fps. 1850 to 18000 (= x 10), that's quite exceptional
