I'm a complete noobie to Linux. But with help from here I have managed to install SUSE 9.3 together with the latest nvidia driver or so I think. All seems well sort of. I do not get any splash screen from nvidia but it all seems to say that it is running even with 3d. I also have an issue with the display size. I want to run 1920 x 1200 but it only seems to display 1650 x 1050 and won't let me change this any bigger in visualisation. Any help would be appreciated as I have to deliver this on Tuesday.

I should add the machine specs if that helps.

Em well kk i take it that your moniter is lcd, and therefor is it def able to support that resolution??? and in saX make sure that the moniter set up is for your moniter and that the moniter sizes are correct. If that doesnt work then choose your moniter to be 'LCD' rather than a specif make. But make sure that u do NOT put the refresh rate or res higher than your mon can handle cos that can cos serious damage.

Yes the monitor can support that res and I did install the monitor from the manufacturers disk and all the settings appear to be correct. I am using the DVI connection.

go to init 3 and run sax from there and choose 'LCD' from the moniter list and make sure that the size is set to 24inches. then restart x 'rcxdm restart' and then go bak to init 5. c if thatv helps any

Tried that and no difference still only get a real res of 1650 x 1050 and no splash screen.

I am not sure about the nvidia framebuffer device, but vesa framebuffer definitely doesn't support widescreen resolutions.

Sax2 only configures the X server, which is independent from the framebuffer. The framebuffer is configured through kernel parameters from /boot/grub/menu.lst. Using the vesa framebuffer, you need to use the vga=0x<modenumber> parameter. To use another framebuffer, try video=<device>. Unfortunately I am on a Windows machine and can't look up the vesa table and exact syntax.

After changing the resoluton, you need to take care that the initrd contains a splash picture of the chosen resolution. To include the picture in initrd, run mkinitrd.

I have found where the restriction is. In the customise display section of KDE. But it won't let me alter it any larger. I can't work out what file this is to modify it manually.

As I said previously, the X server has nothing to do with the splashscreen. It is simply not running at the time when the splashscreen is shown. However, if you talk about the graphics when entering runlevel 5, I'll shut up immediately. But the term splashscreen usually refers to the pictures shown during boot. And here is the framebuffer responsible.

Well after messing about for a while I managed to stop xserver running at all. So I started again with a fresh install. I thought that I did the same but obviously I did something slightly different because this time it did allow 1920x1200. I still do not see a nvidia splash screen when xserver loads but it seems to be working because the 3d games work and the system has the correct graphics card and monitor installed. So I will leave well alone. Thanks for all the suggestions. On this install I included the kernel source and c++ in the initial software. Then I ignored the hardware setup and just did all the upgrades including the nvidia driver. Then I did the hardware setup and it worked.
