2006 free DVD problems installing new programs

I just started using linux and i got this one from the "linux magazine" i obviously did my research first on linux, i am trying to install programs on it and it comes up with loads of shell prompts, the "install-sh" one i guessed was the install one for the actual program but when i run it in the Konsole it says "no input file specified" and i dont know were to go from there can anyone help.

oh ye i have been using linux for about 6 months on live DVD and CD versions so i am confidate with it, just not this.

If it's a compressed archive (tar.bz, tar.gz etc.) you'll want to check the README file for how to install it.
There is a very good sticky somewhere on this forum (i think in the 'Newbie' forum) on how to install stuff in Linux.

Personally, i stick to RPMs where possible, they're easiest...

What're you trying to install?
