How to ban members from posting on your threads.

Just what I said in the title.

This guy "Sergei Steshenko" is really making me furious and has mildly offended me in one of his posts.

Is there something I can do to BAN him from posting on any thread started by me?

If you believe any member is breaking the LQ Rules, please hit the report button and let a mod know about it. There is no other direct action a member can take.

I do not think you can do this. More to the point, it is not a good way of dealing with your problem.

You have several obvious options:
  1. Report any behavior that is obviously in violation of LQ rules
  2. Ignore posts that don't seem helpful to you
  3. Try to find out what is causing the friction---eg send private e-mail to the person in question.

I recommend #3

You can ignore a user, just add them to the ignore list. Quite useful, and you can un-ignore them later in case they have changed (I have done this before, there were some users that annoyed me, maybe they were in a bad mood, and later after some time I un-ignore them and everything was fine).

But I want others to understand that I'm not seeing the post.

The way I read this, you want other people to know that you have an issue with a member and that you want them to use that information somehow.

First, this serves no purpose---eg it will in no way help you get your work done.

Second, a forum like LQ is not going to put differences of opinion on public display---beyond what the members do all by themselves

I stand by my earlier post-----have you tried option 3?

It's obvious what's upsetting MTK358, he quite rightly doesn't like being talked down to. That condescending attitude that some knowledgeable members adopt towards newbies is enough to piss anybody off.

But he isn't going against the rules — he is just posting bunches of unhelpful junk.

If other members see that someone replied, they will wait for me to reply before continuing. But I have nothing to reply to!

Maybe just mention in the OP that this member is ingored and if the last post is his, consider it not to be there?

EDIT: @brianL

I kind of agree.

I can't really report him because he isn't really breaking the forum rules, but he really pisses me off.

Regardless of who is right or wrong, I think that any public criticism of another member is going to get you some unwanted attention from the mods.

If I see a thread that starts out with a dig at another member, it would lower my opinion of the OP and decrease the chances of me offering any help.

I suggest that you go back to the 3 options I offered.

So, are you concerned that by replying a user will take your thread off the 0-reply list ? That would be an issue, but is it the issue ?

No, I am saying that if the last post is not by the OP (esp. when there was a long conversation between the OP and another member), others will see no reason to post.

It's this thread that's causing the trouble.

Just looked up some of his posts and he seems to post on almost every thread you make. I´m not sure you could report him for hounding or stalking your threads, but I would seriously be ticked as well... Have you PM´d or emailed the person in question about this?

That's exactly how I feel.

But because he hasn't actually broken the rules, I am powerless.

I count 12 / 123 total threads = 10 % of your threads. That's not that many. Just PM him and tell him to stop posting in your threads.
