Oh yeah! (LFS)
So you installed SUSE 10.0 rite? What music/video programs does it come with?
I just installed MPlayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/news.html on both of my boxes. On my mandrake box I mostly use Amarok and on my fedora box I just started using xmms (kinda like win amp).
I've been tossing around the idea of switching my mandrake box over to slackware 10.2, have you tried it? Maby just add a extra partition just for that who knows. But yeah the LFS Idea is great I'm gonna start reading more about it and try to find where to start

Sorry man, I've been getting ready for finals and stuff. I do want to do something. We need to coordinate on what we need to learn before we try to make our own "distro" If you get a chance to, check out the LFS hints article, their are some good reference materials to get.

Hi Wow other users in my area. This forme was oddly on one of the pages that i was on.
I see you are devling into LFS i have done LFS 5.0. and 6.0
even created My own distro i call CASCADE that can be moved
without having to recomple. LFS is cool cause it allows you
to create a custom distro for your tastes.

Ill try and post more. but happy to see others here in tucson.

As far as i know its the kernel level tools for setting up firewalls and routeing rules.
I mostly find small scripts and such that allow me to setup iptables without
having to do all the work from scratch. However ive been trying to find
another then the one im currently using. I dont think its very secure.

if your intrested its firegate.

Well I've been using Slackware 10.2 I found this script it was made I guess to block any incoming connections but allow all out going connections
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#!/bin/sh

IPT="/usr/sbin/iptables"

echo "0" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

$IPT -F
$IPT -F -t nat
$IPT -F -t mangle

$IPT -X
$IPT -X -t nat
$IPT -X -t mangle

$IPT -P INPUT DROP
$IPT -P OUTPUT ACCEPT

$IPT -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
$IPT -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

but I dont know much about IPtables I've been reading this http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=liniptables
I provides alot of info. I was looking into firestarter http://www.fs-security.com/ I guess its up there with guard dog but I have'nt had much time to mess with them I'm still trying to get my power control to work. I made mt screen saver aware of power management but my monitor wont stand by or any thing. I was also trying to find out if there is a way to put the whole system on stand by (spin down the HD and turn the monitor off??).

Well that's nice to know as long as your still "pluggin" LOL and "educatin" LOL.
So U go back to the OL winblows install or are you still using mepis or live CD's?
I thank mandrake would be good to start with, it's prob. the closest linux distro you could get to winblows. I've used mandrake 10.2 (2005 LE) for about 4 months and just changed to Slackware 10.2 (4 days ago I think) and it's so different but very nice (a great learning exp.).
