Hi,

One week until Christmas and we are having a mild late fall. I played Golf the other day since it was 60 with a little breeze. Boy that was great! We do need a hard freeze so as to winter the bugs. Maybe it's about time to work on the snow thrower because time will be short before the storms will be placing a blanket over us again. They are getting a lot in the plains so it won't be long for us to get some snow.

I remember long ago the winters in Northern Illinois. When it snowed we got feet not inches. Most times as a kid we could barely walk through the snow. Great time to slide down the hills with our old Plymouth hood, better than any sleigh or board. We could get 6 maybe 7 on the hood and go barreling down the hill across the river road and zoom down the bank only to jump at the bottom with a small ledge then onto the frozen river. We would skid out to the middle only having to walk back up the bank and hill side. We were lucky not to break our necks or get seriously hurt. By the time the buss came most of us were wet to the bone. Sometimes one of our parents would come down to tell us 'No School' and off we went to continue sliding down that hill until we were either too cold or wet. We would usually run to my Grandma's store to warm up. She would send us on our way if we were to loud or rough housing.

As Kids we would stay out for long periods to just play and run around in the snow. Sad, but now kids really do not know how to play unless it's a one box or play station. Interactions are over the net or cel so they really lose it or miss having some real fun. Technology is degrading our youth both in mind and physical attributes/activities.

We had a big woods neighboring our area that belonged to the mother-house. We would run through the woods playing until the care taker would chase us out. He would chase us and holler all the way that he would get us if he ever caught us. Never did! We thought he was old & mean but we would always end up in the woods playing again.

As a young man I met loads of nice people from the big city (Chicago) visiting our little haven. The Fox river ran through going south and we would adventure as far as possible along the river. We would fish and any catch we would take to the club house to sell to the visitors. We would get at lease 2 bits for a 2 pound carp. Even more for other white fish from the older ladies that loved to cook the fresh fish.

Some great boyhood memories from the Fox and surrounding area. I still love to be outdoors and fell close to mother nature. Respect what God has given to me to enjoy daily. Memories!!
