XMMS audio cd playing

In the other post the same issue arose, but I wanted to dedicte this thread to it. The readme said to configrue the input cd plugin accordingly and I did. in device /mnt/cdrom and directoy /mnt/cdrom.
it said that when i should insert a cd, and go into /mnt/cdrom and Trackxx.cda should be there and I should play those files. Problem is, there is NOTHING in there. Obviosuly, an aucd cannot be mounted.
anyone could help me out with this? maybe im missin somethign really obvious?

thanks

Did you use the XMMS playlist file+ to navigate to the CD to load
the songs? If yes, is /mnt/cdrom your actual CDROM name?

Hmm, Might have the answer. Once you navigate to /mnt/cdrom (Like I just tried), I had to select "add all files in directory" before they were listed, then I could add them.

xmms and audio cd's

XMMS and audio cd's, are as far as I am concerned, a pain in the arse.

I have one playing at the moment. I have only recently managed to work out how to play audio cd's again under linux with any of the popular app's.

If you have a look at the xmms website, there seems to be a fair amount of info about it, but the one thing that I couldn't find was basic instructions on how to use the various elements of xmms.

You get this "schpiel" about how it's intuitive, like f**k it is, I for one, have never used "winamp" in my life, so I couldn't compare it. So Ok, maybe you are saying that makes me a "wind0w$ drone", well, you are probably right.

To be fair, when it's going, I prefer it, but it can be an SOB to get going - bearing in mind that I know the square root of f**k all about linux in relative terms,

and I use mandrake 9.0, not Slack,

and I know nothing of your system,

My system has a dvd player and a cdrw. Mandrake rather kindly has decided that it want's to call the dvd player,CDROM, and the cdrw CDROM2.

That was the first problem. I couldn't make xmms understand such naming conventions.

Since then, I have found that the cdrw/CDROM2 is known as scd0 by the system and the dvd player/CDROM is known as hdb.

From there, I got stuck for a while. Now I have since found out that the dvd/CDROM won't play audio discs anyhow, due to the cdrw/CDROM2/scd0 being the drive that has the "audio connect" cable to the sound card.

What I actually have to do to get a disc playing is to start xmms, then click on the PL radio button so I get the playlist editor on screen. Now to point it at the cdrw/CDROM2/scd0, I have been right clicking on the "player" window, which gives me a "select a direction to add" file tree dialogue window. I then have to click on the directories as follows:

dev>scsi>host0>bus0>target2>lun0

so that part of the tree is open.

If that doesn't give me the playlist in the "playlist editor" window, then I have found that going down the file tree to mnt>cdrom2 and selecting that will give me the required track list, and then it's just a case of clicking on the required track and playing.

I should point out that I also have to de select the "random" and "repeat" buttons on the "player", otherwise the tracks just jump all over the place and sometimes just stop playing.

Oh and I use KDE as a gui and have gnome available, so I can also use either KSCD and grip to play audio cd's. If/when I am getting pissed off with xmms, I can just point kscd and grip at /dev/scd0 and they both find the tracks straight off.

My suggestions are a bit on the "sweeping generalisation" side, as the presumption that your cdrom/cdrw/whatever is using the scsi emulation.

Hopefully, this may give you some ideas and doesn't seem like I'm trying to "teach granny too suck eggs". I also am unable to tell you what the stages that I have followed actually mean, because I haven't really got the foggiest idea. I just posted here, and followed other peoples suggestions and managed to "hit the nail on the head"!

good luck with it

regards

John

In XMMS, (i have to 2 CDROMs, 1 is read only, slow from the factory at location /dev/cdrom and navigable at /mnt/cdrom, and a RW that is used for all my playing/burning cause it is about 8 times faster.

In XMMS, the device is /dev/cdrom1, directory /mnt/cdrom1.
In kscd, which is what I use to listen to CDs, the CDROM device is listed as /dev/cdrom1 (/dev/cdrom1 is the label to the scsi emulated CDRW device) I have redhat 8.0, and it automatically aliased /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdb and /dev/cdrom1 to /dev/sg0 so I can access it many ways.

Post you /etc/fstab file and many can tell you exactly what to put as your settings.

bigjohn, yeah the CD cable has to be there. On my computer, the sound card has two cable slots so I can play from either one. I also use KSCD for cdplaying cause XMMS is harder and you don't get the special affects with XMMS like you do with OGGs.

im not home right now, i can't do it.
i have a cdrom and a cd-rw drive.
the audio cable is connected to the cd-rw drive. so i should use that drive right?
in which case, its /dev/sr0 and /mnt/cdr
that should work then, right?

Yes, if /dev/sr0 is name of the device. Can't be totally confident unless I see the fstab lines cause each distro using different naming conventions.

It looks like you should navigate to /mnt/cdr instead of /mnt/cdrom
also, you can try /dev/sr0 in kscd.
