Finally have my sound system running very well. I figured out the alsa driver and my sound card and the music sounds effing fantastic. Here is one small problem though--it would hardly be linux without one--when I play a cd using XMMS I am unable to control the volume unless I pull-up a mixer. The equalizer does not work either. This only happens when playing a CD.

If I use XMMS to play mp3s the program responds like a champ. Does anyone have an idea about this?

Nevermind, I figured it out.

I did two things. One or the other or both did the trick. The first thing I did was to configure the ALSA output plugin to use the "software volume control". The second thing I did was to configure the CDaudio player "libcdaudio.so" input plug-in and set play-mode to digital audio extraction.

I have the same loss of cd-volume control. Instead, "Line1" controls the volume and no further controls. But, It seems that you have figured out how to fix this problem:

I am new to this. Will you explain exactly how you have done those processes so that I can replicate what you have done.
