To be quite honest, I do find learning linux a bit of a nuisance, because the only reason that I started it was to be able to avoid using M$ software as much as possible - I'm a "wannabe" Micr0$0ft refusenik (which translates from my ramblings to english as "I don't really care how it works, I just want it to work".
Though "as any fule know!" with linux, you can't really get away with my "intended" approach. You have to learn something about it - what's pissed me off is that, the other day I had the bloody box open to through another 512 megs of ram into it, and it didn't occur to me to check the sound card (creative soundblaster live! 5.1 digital) to see if it had 2 f*****g plugs on it (damn damn damn). I suppose I will have to have another look inside.
I also have to admit that when you said about the curious naming convention of the drives in your machine under deadrat, I though (somewhat smugly - ha, I'm glad it's not just me - but then again, mandrake is deadrat based isn't it - just that the names are slightly different).
I was having a problem with this too. I usually use debian, but this is my new laptop with mandrake 9.1 for thrills:
On xmms, you have to add the directory - not the files. I changed my info in the xmms prefs for the audio cd plugin to device = /dev/hdc , directory = /mnt/cdrom .
The 'add files' failed to show anything in the directory.
However, using 'add directory' and then choosing /mt/cdrom works fine.
Also in Linux,, there are other options to play a cd: KDE has kscd, and GNOME has gtcd, both dedicated cd players that play just cds with no fussin' or fighting.
