Well,
let's start from the beginning.
What type of computer and sound card do you have? Are you using ALSA or OSS?
If you don't know what type of sound card do you have, try
/sbin/lcpci
It should say you (amont other things) somthing like:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio (rev 02)
i.e. I have intel AC'97 sound on my computer. Vanilla RH9 did not recongnize that. There is a problem with ALSA and this card (motherboard?) as well, so I got my sound to work first after compiling OSS into kernel (2.6.8.1).
