Steam install failed, system wide usability issues - Debian 9, MATE, AMD A10, FGLRX

Hey everyone, been a while since I've been here.

Last night I tried to install Steam from the non-free Debian repo. The install process required me to enable i386 packages - upon installing Steam, tons of packages were installed. I have no idea what they are, but somewhere along the line, window compositing (??) may have broken. This Steam install appeared to have completed successfully but it failed so hard I couldn't run it without a system hang. I removed this Steam and installed the .deb from Valve which works fine as of now.

However, now I can't open Chromium, Spotify, or just about any package that isn't Firefox or LibreOffice. What happens is this: app opens, the window itself flickers for a few seconds, then only the window borders remain - the rest of the window is transparent, and I'm looking right through it at my desktop background. Then they will either close immediately or hang for a few moments before closing.

Yes, I have reinstalled the afflicted packages and reinstalled the AMD FGLRX driver. I'm running the latest version (15.302) from the AMD website. No changes. Everything worked fine before Steam, the removal of which via apt-get did not repair the issue. Where do I begin?

System specs:
Debian 9, MATE & XFCE (problem in both DWMs)
8GB RAM / 2x 1TB HW RAID
AMD A10-7890K, 4.2GHz, using Integrated "APU" Radeon R7 Graphics
MSI A68HI-AC system board
Monitors: DVI, 1440x900 / VGA, 1280x1024 / HDMI TV, 1920x1080

EDIT: Forgot the failure messages.

Spotify:
Code:
:~$ spotify

You could analyze the install script of Steam (from deb non free).

And find out, how this script changed the system.
Good luck for this action...

By opinion: reinstall system.
