Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

FGLRX DRI issues in debian etch
hello,
I am running Debian etch currently on my HP nc8000 laptop, quite possible one of the most pleasant laptops to install Linux on, but I am having one slight issue. For a few months now I've been attempting to get Direct rendering to work with the laptop's
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
For the life of me I cannot get this to work, I installed the fglrx driver from debian's repositories, and even went as far as generating my own .deb files with
Code:
Apollo:/home/ron1n# ./ati-driver-installer-8.33.6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Debian/etch
and installing them like so
Code:
Apollo:/home/ron1n# dpkg -i fglrx-*
but after any and every attempt glxinfo still tells me this:
Code:
ron1n@Apollo:~$ glxinfo | grep render
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
direct rendering: No
GLX_ATI_pixel_format_float, GLX_ATI_render_texture
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
fglrxinfo doesn't tell me much more either:
Code:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)
I've done everything I can and this fustration is seriously overwhelming.
Any help is
much appreciated, I've been at this for quiet a while.
The only clue I have is somewhere deep inside /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:

Look for the fglrx kernel module running. If it isn't installed with installer (I had got the same problem earlier), than compile and install it with your hands.

Although I'm several months into using Debian, I haven't had much experience with kernel modules.
is that how I see if the kernel module is running?
if so, it returns
Code:
FATAL: Module fglrx not found.
I have the latest installer from the website
what should I pass to it so I can compile and install by hand?

What kernel are you using. If you can't get a newer one, you'll probably have to clean up your mess before you can get it working. It's best to install the ones from Debian using module-assistant I did install the ones in experimental to get a newer version with no difficulty, but I wouldn't recommend that for the first time.
I wrote a little howto
in this thread a while back. The only things that should have changed is the kernel version and the references to Sid. The current kernel is 2.6.18-4, and everything you need is now in Etch.
One other thing, you might need to manually change "ati" to "fglrx" in the Device Section of your xorg.conf file.

Thanks so much!
module-assistant fixed everything
I has previously installed the source code without thinking about it.
it was
Code:
./ati-driver-installer-8.33.6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Debian/etch
and then
installed it into /usr/src for me
it was as simple as
installing it with module assistant and configuring it!
tonight I have seen the most beautiful thing with my eyes ever...
no back-talk from
=]
Code:
glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
Thanks again,
Salvatore

There was a discussion about the installation and support (I tried to install this on SUSE 10.2 but it is not SUSE specific problem).
I have put there the steps which way I installed the driver - including patch and so on for kernel 2.6.20.
You can download the tar.bz2 file unpack it and rebuild the driver yourself. Let me know if it worked or any help was needed.
