I'm using Mandrake 9.1 w/ KDE.
My question is with the arts sound server.
It has always seemed unreliable. Many programs, like XMMS, Quake, etc., don't natively support arts, so I have to emulate it with 'artsdsp [-m] [program]'. This seems like a hack, though, and it creates lag in the sound.
Also programs will stop outputing sound altogether, unless I the arts sound server from scratch.
Are there any other common sound servers like arts, but are more reliable?
Thanks
There's another sound server called "esd" that Gnome uses. Another options is to just disable "arts" because most programs support the underlying "oss" system.
Try K-Menu,Control Center,Sound,Sound Server,Sound IO:Sound IO Method:Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA).If it doesn't work try to install ALSA.It fixed my problems with arts(and other programs). After installation of ALSA volume control is 0.K-Menu,Multimedia,Sound,Aumix or Kmix(sound mixer)to adjust volume.K-Menu,Control Center,Sound,Mixer to Save settings and Load Volume at login. You have to download 3 drivers (cca 2 MB)from http://www.alsa-project.org/ ,and read manual. It all is not easy.
