rpm dependency

While installing a rpm, I get a lot of dependency saying so many .so files are required.

How do I know which rpm can provide that? Is there a rpm command option which can show me the package names instead of the .so file?

RPM based distros nowadays come with their own dependency checking install software. Suse/Novell has Yast and Fedora has yum. In a console (as root) run yum install <packagename>.

Alternatively, do a search for the name of the so file without the .so at the end.

up2date and yum is cable of resolving the dependencies where they are connected to the rhn (Since I use the RHEL). However, in this case, I need to install a 3rd party rpm which is throughing lot of dependency errors.

Is there any rpm command switch that can help me find out the actual rpm package for the dependencies.

Which version are you using?

You are usually better off finding a repo that supplies the rpm and setting yum up to use it.

RHEL AS 3.
Unfortunately, server is isolated and can not be connected to rhn

The reality is that running linux(any version, distro) without a internet connection is pretty tough. The good news is that without a internet connection you are more secure than if you were directly exposed to the net. RHEL3 precedes yum(I think) or I would suggest making your own internal repo. Basically you just download everything in the repo and set up your own. The newer version have a createrepo package.
