Question quicktime movies in mplayer...

First off, I have an RH 7.3 box with an nvidia graphics card. I use the driver from the nvidia site.

I recently downloaded mplayer and the new trailer of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Bottomline is, I hear it but I can't see it. It says Can't find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x33515653!

Any ideas anyone? It's rather frustrating for me, I use both a mac and a win2k box at work and this of course is a bit easier on those computers.

Do you have the win32 codecs installed? And what is the command you are using to view it?

Ok, and which version of mplayer are you running? If it's pre5 or older, upgrade and try again.

I type mplayer TheTwoTowers_fs.l.mov

I have also used the -vo xv and -vo x11 options... , I've just installed the codecs... still the same. I've tried fiddling with the miscellaneous options under preferences and selected Apple Quicktime Video (using gmplayer this time.... still nothing.

just saw your post, I have mplayer-0.90pre8-1... hmmmmm...

Sorry, I fell asleep... it was midnight then.

Most trailers I get from Apple's website, http://www.apple.com/trailers/

I see you've got the trailer too. I'm at work right now, I'll have to check when I get home. Anyway, thanks...

If you have Realplayer 8 for linux installed, just click the "trailer" in the link below and choose the Real fomat. Doesn't solve your problem, but at least you can watch the trailer!

Two Towers Real format

I've gotten mplayer to play older .mov movies, but have never been able to play more recent movies.

the new LotR trailer is in the new quicktime format. I searched the web around the time it was released, and it did not look likely we'll see Linux support for the new quicktime anytime soon.. You'll get audio but thats it.

there is a good deal of info out there on the web regarding this, some of it even neato to read...

For all my quick time movie needs I use codeweavers cross-over plugin
http://www.codeweavers.com
I paid for it 25 bucks like 3 mounth ago and I am getting free updates as soon as the new version comes up, it is well invested $25. A free version garabages your screen with messages from codewevers about hungry developers, just give them 25 bucks and they are fed for the rest of their existence (I hope they are doing good).
