I've seen various articles and threads discussing running quake 3 on linux, but I'm still wondering about it. Now, I've found a product on amazon.com which actually says it's quake 3 specifically for linux, but it's at least $45, while normal quake 3 is only about $17. Here are my two questions: 1) Do I have to buy a linux version of this game, or can I just tweak it and make it run in linux rh9? 2) Will linux versions of games always be more expensive?
I picked up Quake 3 for Linux for $15 (Canadian) at a local software shop, along with Railroad Tycoon for Linux for my wife (also $15 Cdn). We haven't had time to install or play these games. The Quake 3 packaging is really nice; it comes in a tin box.
However, these games were ported and published by Loki Software, which went belly-up some time ago. I bought the last copies of each game from the above software shop (Multimedia Technologies at Broadway and Granville here in Vancouver, British Columbia). I was pretty happy with the find; I feel like the Quake 3 package is like a collector's item
ID software has linux installer for your windows version of Quake 3. Just do a search for their ftp site, download the installer and run it. It actually quite easy!
1. Download the latest point release from id's FTP site or a mirror.
2. Install it by becoming root and running sh linuxq3apoint-1.32b.x86.run.
3. When installation is complete, mount your CD and copy the file setup/baseq3/pak0.pk3 to the baseq3 subdirectory of wherever you installed Quake 3.
4. For Team Arena, mount your Q3:TA CD and copy all the pk3 files in the setup/missionpack directory into the missionpack subdirectory of your Quake 3 directory.
Thanks a ton! I'll be sure to do that, now I just gotta go buy the game, now that it's proven possible to run. Don't wanna spend money on games that don't run.
