As far as I've found in my own search, ftp.idsoftware.com isn't accepting connections for some reason.

woooooow.......
first of all id's quake is too out dated, it doesnt worm on modern linux distro's you need redhat 6 or similar age... use one of the following...

If you want an almost identicle re-make of quake and quake 2. then use
http://quakeforge.net
it looks identicle, plays identicle, well, it IS quake, but re-programmed for modern linux.
it has single player mode, and multiplayer quakeworld client and server.
do not download the latest release version, it has a bug in loading saved games, dowload it via cvs. (you will need to compile urself)

HOWEVER....
(and this is going to make quake fans DRUEL !)
tenenbrae !!! (search google for it homepage)
its quake, same single player and multi player maps, re-textured, re modemed.
its quake one, but with graphics far superior to unrealtournament 2003.
full real-time shadow engine, everything... AMASING !!!!!!!
however you will need to download the new textures which are approx 80 megs.
