Precompiled Kernel Interface?

Hey guys,

I hate to inundate you with newbie-esque questions, but I'm still trying to get my driver working correctly, and this is my only hope for help.

In order to install the nVidia driver correctly on mu system (I'm using the IA32 4496 Package) I need either a: precompiled kernel interface, or a kernel that I can compile. When I run the nVidia installer, it looks on the FTP site and can't find anything. Would any of you know which one I need? Here are the relevant stats:

Video Card: GeForce 4 Ti 4600
DIstro: Mandrake 10.0
Driver I need to use: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
Driver I'm using: Vesa

Thanks ever so much for your help.

I owe you guys a couple

what is your kernel version? do you have the kernel sources installed? its best for the installer to create its own module from your sources then download a precompiled one. try that.

how can I tell my kernel version?
when I installed Mandrake 10.0, I selected the development package,
so I assume that I installed the kernel.

Sorry, I'm kind of new to this. You'll have to bear with me.

Type
Code:
uname -r
Kernel sources are usually installed in /usr/src.

So, I downloaded two packages for my kernel,
one being

kernel-source-2.6.3-7
and the other being
kernel-2.6.3-7

supposedly these are the two files that I need,
and I tried installing them, but the kernel source is already installed (I selected that option when I installed)

and the other seems to install, but I seem to recall an error of sorts.
I'll be sure and post about this one later.

Anyways, when I try and install the driver it says that there is no precompiled kernel interface installed, and that it can't find anything on my hard drive or online.

Any of you know of a solution to this one?
I'm itching to get it working.

Thanks,

Haku

if it says that the source is already installed, check your /usr/src folder and see if there is a folder that says 2.6.3-7 or something similar...

if there is, then run the nvidia driver installer and when it says that no kernel interface is found, it'll tell you that it'll need to compile a new kernel interface from your current kernel...

Just say continue or ok or whatever and it should work just fine.
Sorry that I don't tell you exactly what it says, but I'm saying all this by memory as I'm running windoez right now.
