2.4.18-bf24 - NFORCE drivers - no precompiled kernel interface

Hey,

Just installed Debian - using the bf24 option so I get a 2.4 kernel.

I have a NF7-S motherboard and use the builtin network port to connect to the net, but I need to successfully install the NFORCE drivers first.

I have the .run install file for the NFORCE drivers, but when I run it I get a

'No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.'

Okay, so I pressed enter and it said it couldn't find the kernel source. I used apt-cache to search the CD for kernel sources and then installed the kernel-sources-2.4.18 package - its pretty close to 2.4.18-bf24 .. ?

I made a symbolic link to the source files etc, but now after the 'No precompiled kernel interface' msg I get a

'gcc-version-check failed:

Could not compile gcc-version-check.c

If you know what you are doing and want to ignore the gcc version check, select "No" to continue the installation. Otherwise, select "Yes" to abort installation, set the CC environment variable to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel, and restart installation. Abort now?'

I don't want to ignore the msg, and I don't know exactly what it wants me to do - can anyone shed some light?

It's assumed to be safe ignore the message though I never did myself. The thing is that the gcc you've got installed is of a different version than the one that was used for the kernel version. I don't know how to find out the kernel version but it might be worth it just ignoring the message.
