What happens when you run these commands from a terminal as root;
gcc -v
make -v
I don't use Xandros but you may need some development software.
Xandros is based on Corel which is based on debian.
If you really want to install from source you will run into some blocks
I would think.
What do you want to install?
To install from source you most times;
tar xzvf whatever.tar.gz
cd whatever
ls
should be a readme or install file to look at
cat readme
./configure
make
su
<password>
make install
something like that ...

MANY THANKS. SO FAR I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST FIRE FOX BUT ./CONFIGURE WOULDN'T WORK AS IT SAID FILE DOESNT EXIST. BUT IT IS MOST SOFTWARE IN GENERAL. I AM CROSSING FROM WINDOWS. DUAL BOOT WITH SEPARATE HARD DRIVES. SO IT FEELs LIKE LEARNING FROM SCRATCH. Xandros HAS A GOOD GUI AND COMES WITH ALOT OF USEFUL APPS. IS THERE ANY RECOMMENDED BOOKS ON HOW TO USE THE CONSOL?

Zack: Xandros comes with a guide on how to use the system, i think you can find it in the startmenu. You can also take a look at this book: http://www.amazon.com/Linux-Made-Eas.../dp/1593270577

Thank you, that works a treat. I can see this may take a little while getting used to!
