TSC cannot be used as a timesource.
Possible reasons for this are:
  You're running with Speedstep,
  You don't have DMA enabled for your hard disk (see hdparm),
  Incorrect TSC synchronization on an SMP system (see dmesg).
Falling back to a sane timesource now.
[root@localhost ~]#
It's a tower with a p4 3.x Ghz proc, HT enabled. There wasn't any options for speedstep in the bios.

So, I tried running hdparm -d1 /dev/hda, but got:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing cached reads:   4968 MB in  2.00 seconds = 2484.38 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   12 MB in  3.07 seconds =   3.91 MB/sec
[root@localhost ~]# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 16383/255/63, sectors = 80026361856, start = 0
[root@localhost ~]# hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)
I also had tried putting clock=PIT on the grub kernel line, but that caused a kernel panic.

Any Hints?

Thanks!

-Jeff

Hi

The output you have supplied shows

/dev/hda:
...
using_dma = 0 (off)
...

Try turning on DMA for /dev/hda with

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

then reboot the system and see if the fault clears.

Hope that helps

Chris

General comments on the www seem to indicate that this may be caused
by using an incorrect IDE driver.

it looks to me like Linux is seeing an IDE interface and i bet based on the specs you gave you have a SATA controller not an IDE controller.
your hard drive should be sda not hda.
i think go into the kernel config and set the motherboard chipset as bultin not a module the recompile kernel and it will work.

Thanks All, I'll look into recompiling the kernel with both the sata controller, first, then the timer options.
