Installing MPlayer

i have FC10!!
so far i have downloaded the mplayer and its codecs.further i extracted both the packages( in DOWNLOAD folder).but I'm not able to extract the codecs in the /usr/local/lib/codecs directory.it says you do not have permission(despite of being logged in as su). how do we do this??

whats the next step by step procedure??
how should i know whether to compile the mplayer or is it pre-compiled??
do mention about the codecs issue!!

If you cannot extract into /usr/local/lib/codecs, then you have a permissions issue. You say you su'd to root in terminal, and you still cannot extract?

John VV in a different thread suggested using yum, after registering at rpmfusion.org. Unless you are like me and appreciate doing things the hard way, go that route by all means.

please see the fedora how to by Mjm for mplayer
"Personal Fedora 10 Installation Guide"
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f10.html
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers

and use yum to install mplayer
P.S. mjm uses "sudo" i don't i use " su - "
so change the how to a bit to use " su - " ( unless you do want to use sudo. )

that is unless you DO want to build about 20 dependencies from the source code BEFORE you can build the mplayer source
the source build will take about 2hours , if you know what you are doing, and about 1 to 2 weeks if you don't
