How can my program use a dependency of the linux system?

Everytime I install some program I see that a lot of dependencies are installed together. For example, some libraries that the program uses. How to call such libraries in C or C++? I can't find it by doing simple google searches. How do I know where the library is located in the system, and how to use its functions?

this conversation is another good example why people should always include the search terms used, when they talk about using search engines.

You only need to include the header(s) of the library and to link the library to your executable, then you should be able to call every interface which is part of the library and declared in the header(s).

Please see here for a simple example.
