I'm trying to set up Avidemux on a friend's PC so that he can convert some of his videos to a different format (he's using Windows), and I cannot find the same options on his version of Avidemux that are present on mine (I'm using Ubuntu).

He needs to convert some videos to "MPEG-4 ASP (XVID)" format, which on my Avidemux is right there in the dropdown list for available video output formats.

On his version, however, he has:

I've tried the first three, but none of them output to the right format. Is there a way of saving out to the format he wants - but just called something different on the Windows version?

It occurs to me that perhaps the codecs for saving as Xvid are not installed on his machine - although videos of this type play in VLC and other media players.

Do I need to install the package given on this page below? I am wary of just installing Windows software on someone else's machine.

How could ffdshow help? It is decoder only. Can't you download and install Xvid for Windows?

Well, I wasn't sure if the lack of this option on his Avidemux was because the encoders weren't present, or because this option was called something else on the (possibly later) version of Avidemux he has. If you're saying that all his system needs is to have xvid encoders installed and Avidemux will then magically present that option on its list, I'll do it.

Oh no, I'm not saying anything! Latest Windows crashed out from my household in 2003. Don't consider me liable if your friend's Windows lets the smoke out.

Well, that's why I'm being reticent. I've had Linux since 2007, and Avidemux has always come up with the xvid option straight out the box. Although getting Ubuntu Restricted Extras straight after install might have had something to do with that :-D
