all menu items and shortcuts lost after package installation

hi all,

i just installed a bunch of packages to facilitate using chinese in linux, and when i restarted x, all of my quick launch shortcuts weren't working, and a lot of my menu entries are missing (including terminal). at the moment i'm working in gnome and running programs through the "run application" button in the menu. any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

thanks a lot.
