sound card problem with FC2

I'm new to Linux, after an unsucessful install with RH9, I decide to try FC2. Everything works this time except for the sound card.

The strange thing is that before doing all this alsa config stuff, FC2 DETECTED the correct sound card, just that when I try to test the sound, nothing came out. (strangely enough, in my unsuccessful installation of RH9, i was able to get the "beeps" but ethernet card wasn't detected). Anyways, I was following the instruction from the IBM site (just type IBM linux s50 on google), should be the first link that shows the site where IBM test the product (I can't seem to post the URL here since i don't have enough points)

and download an old version of alsa 0.98 drivers and utils etc. I did everything it said, didn't work.

Then, looking at many previous post, I went to the ALSA site to look for answers. I found this page in alsa for my particular sound card. (i can't post the URL here for some reason) company=Intel&card=i820E&chip=i820E&module=intel8x0

so i downloaded the alsa-driver-1.0.5a and the lib, oss, tool, util. and folllowing the instruction in the doc. When i get to the modprobe step, i ran into a bunch of errors:

Code:
root@localhost alsa-driver-1.0.5a]# /sbin/modprobe snd-intel8x0

WARNING: Error inserting snd
(/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting snd_seq_device
(/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/seq/snd-seq-device.ko):
Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting snd_rawmidi
(/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358smp/kernel/sound/acore/snd-rawmidi.ko): Unknown
symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
and so on..

so i try dmesg and i got the following

Code:
ster
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_info_create_module_entry
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_info_free_entry
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_seq_root
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_verbose_printk
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_iprintf
snd_seq_device: Unknown symbol snd_kcalloc
So i'm guessting i didn't install the drivers and library properly. Would it be because of the installation of the old driver that's causing the problem? Also, if FC2 already detects the correct sound card, it should have the driver for it, why is it that there is no sound?

oh the sound card i'm using is:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R)
AC'97 A udio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: IBM: Unknown device 0287
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 177
I/O ports at 1c00
I/O ports at 18c0 [size=64]
Memory at e8080c00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]
Memory at e8080800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version

many thanks!

Alex

nevermind problem solved, apparently if any sound device (not just the speaker) is muted at all), no sound will come out. I had another version of the kernel installed (w/o smp) and it works now. The original one is kinda a mess. So as someone who doesn't know much, i'm just gonnna reinstall everything...sigh...
